Opening a U.S. bank account is one of the first and most important steps for any newcomer. It is essential for receiving a salary, paying bills, and building a financial history in the United States. However, banks are subject to strict federal regulations to prevent fraud and money laundering. To comply, they must verify the identity of every person who opens an account. If your identification documents are not in English, you will need to provide certified translations.
Federal law, particularly the "Know Your Customer" (KYC) guidelines, legally requires banks to verify the identity of their clients. A non-English ID without a certified translation cannot be accepted as valid proof.
Why Banks Require Translated Documents
When you open an account, a bank needs to confirm who you are and where you live. This often requires multiple forms of identification. If any of these documents are in a foreign language, they must be translated.
- Foreign Passport & Visa: While your passport photo page may be multilingual, the visa and entry stamps, which prove your legal status, are often required and must be understandable to the bank.
- Proof of Address: A utility bill or lease agreement from your home country may be used as secondary identification. This must be fully translated.
- Foreign Government-Issued ID: A foreign driver's license or national identity card is often used as a second form of ID. A certified translation is required to validate it.
- Foreign Financial Statements: If you are transferring a large sum of money to open your account, the bank may ask for translated statements from your foreign bank to verify the source of the funds.
The Role of a Certified Translation
A certified translation for a bank must be complete, accurate, and accompanied by a "Certificate of Accuracy." This signed statement from the translator or translation company attests to the translation's fidelity to the original document. This gives the bank the legal assurance they need to comply with federal regulations and approve your account. A simple, uncertified translation will be rejected, delaying your ability to get banked.
